World Compliment Day

March 1st: World Compliment Day!

After  successful editions of “National Compliment Day” in the Netherlands (since 2011 also spreading into Belgium and Norway) the initiators wonder why the event should not become a ‘World Compliment Day’ and thus create ‘The Most Positive Day in the World’?

The reasoning behind it makes sense. The initiative, in contrast to Valentine's Day, Secretaries' Day, and Mother and Father's Days, is not commercially oriented, so everyone can afford to participate. ‘World Compliment Day’ simply addresses the basic human need for recognition and appreciation. Nobody wins commercially, but everybody gains emotionally. And therein lies its power.

March 1st is just about consciously reflecting on what someone in your area does well and letting that person know he/she is sincerely appreciated for that. It should be done through words instead of gifts. "A sincere and personal compliment costs nothing, but the impact on the recipient is huge," says Hans Poortvliet, recognition professional and the driving force behind the annual event in the Netherlands. "Nothing stimulates more, gives more energy, makes people happier and, as far as business is concerned, increases productivity and commitment faster than sincere appreciation. So why not use it a little bit more?"

For global promotion of the initiative Poortvliet counts on his own extensive international network among which RPI (Recognition Professionals International) and the ‘MasterPeace.org’ initiative. "And of course it is my sincere hope that Twitter & Facebook will prove their incredible strength as social media once again. After all: What is more social than showing sincere appreciation for another human being? If on March 1st every person pays at least three people in his/her environment or (social) network a genuine and sincere compliment we will definitely create the Most Positive Day in the World!”

In this intership, the intern will be given tasks relating to online marketing, ecommerce and fulfilment.  These talks will be mostly related to:
It is very difficult to tell you exactly what you will be doing before you arrive as our projects tend to be short. The kind of work you will be doing will most likely be as follows:

• Creating and optimising products for our sales channels e.g. eBay, Amazon, website.  This includes working with descriptions, photos and categorisations
• Translation of product descriptions for our international channels e.g. Amazon.de, Amazon.com, ebay.fr etc
• Creation of content for the purposes of search engine optimisation
• Writing articles for our blog
• Helping with order fulfilment

This work involves extensive use of computers, especially Microsoft word and Excel.
Whilst we try and give interns a variety of work, we obviously cannot give everyone experience of everything during a short internship.  
Example projects

• Launching Amazon Spain. This involved translating products into Spanish, categorising the products, setting up Amazon.es account and pricing products
• Writing blog posts on parenting issues and product reviews - no previous experience required!
• Understanding and improving eBay titles to increase findability and sales
• Improve website titles and meta descriptions to improve search engine performance
• Collating export information for international shipping
• Calculating shipping rates for international shipments
• Improving product imagery to increase website conversions
• Finalising the design of our mobile site

Order fulfilment 
As a small company it is important that everyone gets involved with all jobs.  We expect our interns to help out with order fulfilment i.e. helping with packing and warehouse management for about 1 day a week.  We find that this helps them to get a fuller picture of how the company works and also familarises them with the products we sell.  It also shows you how the complexities of the order system works and is managed.
Specific requirements
If you have specific requirements for your internship e.g.

• You need to spend the majority of your time on a specific project
• You need to experience in a particular area during your internship

You must tell us before arriving.  Unless requested otherwise we will assign tasks according to our business needs. 

1.  Working Hours

Working hours for interns are 9a.m. – 5p.m.  Monday to Thursday and 9a.m. - 4p.m. Friday with one hour for lunch. You will not be required to work weekends or evenings.

2.  Place of work

We are located in St Albans, a town just outside London.
